The Color of Green Jobs: Cooperatives & Energy Justice with Solar Uptown Now Services
When jobs in solar & wind are even whiter than the oil & gas they replaced, how does a Black solar co-op for environmental justice compete?
Throughout the Americas, Black and ...indigenous communities are often used as dumping grounds to house dirty energy infrastructure for the oil and gas industry. The extraction and burning of fossil fuels there results in these communities suffering disproportionately from health problems tied to the fossil fuel industry.
Energy produced from renewable sources like solar can help reduce local air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions and improve health, while also saving families money on home energy bills.
Solar Uptown Now Services (S.U.N.S.) is a solar workers cooperative based in Harlem, New York City that installs and services solar photovoltaics. S.U.N.S. primarily services multi-family affordable housing, where the barriers to solar adoption are greatest and the cost savings are most needed.
S.U.N.S. is helping create a just energy transition by providing training, green jobs, and an ownership stake in renewable energy for local communities of color. They are committed to greater equity in the solar industry and increased accessibility to renewable energy in low-income communities of color on the frontlines of the fight for climate justice.
Join members of Solar Uptown Now Services in conversation about their successes and challenges building a worker cooperative for a just transition.
